The Crisis of Truth II

by

Last time, we discussed the notion that Truth has eroded among modern people based upon the philosophy of the Enlightenment which we termed “the turn to the subject.” This means that people largely understand Truth in terms of SUBJECTIVE considerations, such as feelings and thoughts often with little reference to a reality outside themselves. We see this everywhere today, and it has been devastating to the Catholic Faith in our time. This has to do with basic philosophical principles. But today we look at some passages of Sacred Scripture that have to do with the Truth, since that is who and what our Lord Jesus Christ is—THE Truth.

[1] Thomas said to [Jesus] “Lord we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him. “I am the way, and the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” John 14: 6

[2] Pilate therefore said to him, “Thou art then a king?” Jesus answered, “Thou sayest it; I am a king. This is why I was born, and why I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth hears my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” John 18: 37-38

[3] O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy mountain? He who walks blamelessly and does justice; who thinks the Truth in his heart…Psalm 14: 1-2

[4] Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths. Guide me in your Truth and teach me, for you are God my savior, and for you I wait all the day. Psalm 24: 4-5

[5] Your justice I kept not hid within my heart; your faithfulness and your salvation I have spoken of; I have made no secret of your kindness and your Truth in the vast assembly. Psalm 39: 11

[6] …the prince of the strength (the antichrist)…took away the continual sacrifice [the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass] and cast down the place of the sanctuary. And strength was given him against the continual sacrifice, because of sins. And Truth shall be cast down on the ground, and he shall do and shall prosper. Daniel 8: 11b-12

[7] And his coming (the antichrist) is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all wicked deception to those who are perishing. For they have not received the love of the Truth that they might be saved. Therefore, God shall send them the operation of error that they may believe lying, that all may be judged who have not believed the Truth but have preferred wickedness. 2 Thess: 2: 9-12
