In a horrific display of the cruelty inherent in the surrogacy industry, a surrogate mother was legally coerced by her commissioning “parents” into aborting an unborn child simply because an ultrasound revealed the baby was missing two fingers.
The deeply disturbing account was brought to light by author and prominent anti-surrogacy activist Olivia Maurel. Maurel, who was herself born through a surrogacy arrangement, shared the heartbreaking details during a public discussion of her upcoming book, Where Are You Mommy?
Reacting to the gruesome reality of the story, children’s rights advocate “Billboard Chris” Elston shared a video clip of Maurel’s speech on X, unequivocally condemning the practice.
“This is eugenics. It’s murder. It’s a baby trade, and it needs to be criminalized,” Elston declared.
During the discussion, Maurel exposed the dark reality of the industry, noting that it is shockingly standard for surrogacy contracts to contain abortion clauses. In this specific, tragic instance, an ultrasound revealed a minor physical defect. Unwilling to accept a child who wasn’t physically perfect, the commissioning parents demanded the surrogate terminate the child’s life.
“She was in her third trimester. I have to say: ‘full-grown baby,’” Maurel emphasized.
The surrogate mother bravely tried to refuse the horrific demand. She wanted to protect and keep the baby, telling the commissioning parents “no,” according to Maurel.
However, the legal weight of the insidious surrogacy contract was quickly weaponized against her. The unnamed mother was targeted by lawyers representing the commissioning parents, who threatened her with financial ruin.
“Unfortunately she received a letter from lawyers of the commissioning parents saying that the contract had to be enforced and that she had to get an abortion, or else she would not receive the money and… she would be sued,” Maurel explained. Crushed beneath ruthless legal intimidation, the mother was forced to abort the child over the lack of two fingers.
Abolish the atrocity of surrogacy
This tragic loss of life highlights the urgent need to eradicate the surrogacy industry entirely. Maurel has long fought against this system, testifying before the Czech Republic Parliament in November 2023. She noted that while she does not blame her own parents, she fiercely condemns the legal framework that permits the surrogacy industry to operate.
“This choice defined my entire existence,” Maurel testified. “I am a consequence, and I hope that it will soon be me who will bring about consequences to abolish the atrocity of surrogacy.”
She stressed that the ultimate reason to ban this “monstrosity” is for the protection and sake of the child.
Ultimately, surrogacy operates as a deeply unethical institution that inflicts profound harm on both women and children. It reduces vulnerable women to mere rented wombs—treating them as nothing more than disposable “breeders”—while treating children as purchased commodities who are intentionally and permanently severed from their natural mothers.
