In the face of this manifest spiritual warfare, what words of supernatural defense did the Vatican offer? Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and the notoriously heterodox Jesuit, Fr. James Martin, saw fit to ignore the diabolical root of this evil entirely. Their gaze remained fixed on the temporal and the political. They spoke not of sin, Satan, or the rejection of God’s order, but of “gun violence” and the need for more restrictive laws.
